About Assad Vala

Assad Vala is the cornerstone of Papua New Guinea cricket. Born on August 5, 1987, he is a left-handed top-order batsman and a part-time off-spinner who has captained the national team with distinction. Wearing jersey number 12, Vala is one of PNG’s most accomplished cricketers, both as a leader and a performer. Vala made his international debut in 2005 and has since been a consistent presence in PNG’s ascent through the ranks of associate cricket. His batting is marked by elegance and composure, and he’s capable of anchoring innings or accelerating when needed. He has scored several crucial half-centuries and centuries in ICC World Cricket League and T20 World Cup Qualifiers. As a bowler, his off-spin is reliable and often breaks partnerships. In addition to his dual role on the field, his leadership has transformed PNG into a competitive unit on the global stage. Vala led PNG to their historic qualification for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2021, a milestone moment in the nation’s cricketing history. Off the field, Vala is a role model for young cricketers in PNG. His commitment to development programs and grassroots initiatives has made a tangible impact on the cricketing ecosystem of the country. He remains a respected figure both locally and internationally.
