About Wanindu Hasaranga

Wanindu Hasaranga is one of Sri Lanka’s most dynamic and impactful cricketers in the modern era. Born on July 29, 1997, in Galle, Hasaranga has become a household name due to his leg-spin wizardry, sharp fielding, and explosive lower-order batting. Initially a fast bowler at school level, he transitioned to leg-spin on his coach’s advice and never looked back. Hasaranga made his ODI debut in 2017, claiming a hat-trick in his very first match — a historic feat that instantly put him on the global radar. Over time, he has emerged as Sri Lanka’s premier white-ball spinner, thanks to his control, variations, and ability to strike at crucial moments. His performances in T20 Internationals have been especially outstanding, and he was the leading wicket-taker in the 2021 T20 World Cup. Apart from his bowling, Hasaranga is a powerful striker of the ball and often contributes vital runs down the order. His all-round abilities have earned him contracts in premier T20 leagues including the IPL, BBL, and The Hundred. In the IPL, he played for Royal Challengers Bangalore and finished among the top wicket-takers in the 2022 season. Wearing jersey number 49, Hasaranga is not just a match-winner but also a charismatic figure in the team. His ability to perform under pressure and adapt to different formats makes him central to Sri Lanka’s revival in international cricket. As of 2025, he is regarded as one of the top T20 all-rounders globally.
